Nowadays we are used to being able to contact anyone using a mobile phone. And it’s not just through a phone call, there’s also Facebook, Watsapp, Skype, iMessage, text (and the list goes on and on!) So if you are about to go on a blind date and don’t have your date’s full name and number, it probably feels like there is no way at all to contact them. But let’s recall life pre-mobile phones – you’d have to phone the meeting place in order to contact anyone between them leaving the house and arriving at the destination. So if you don’t know your date’s details, remember that you can always phone the restaurant! When contacting the restaurant for a last minute cancellation in a time of emergency, I recommend the following three actions:
- Refer to your table booking name and reservation time so they can make a note of your absence as courtesy to both your date and the restaurant.
- Leave a message to pass on to your date where you apologise and explain your absence, and/or leave your contact details with the restaurant to pass on to your date if you feel comfortable doing so.
- Ask to purchase a drink for your date in advance, you can ask to pay for it over the phone with your credit card.
Sometimes things go awry and that’s okay – people understand this and are generally willing to accommodate. By following the above steps you will prove to your date that you do care and have every best intention but due to unfortunate circumstances could not make it. Nobody wants to turn up to a blind date only to be met by no-one – let’s leave that in the world of catfishing and shady online dates! Have a think about how you would feel on the receiving end – it would be disappointing and disheartening, but if you respond in a respectful and courteous manner you will be able to prove to your date that you are genuine, well-intentioned and worthy of meeting at another point in time!
